Why Does this Matter?
South Australians in regional, rural and remote communities often face additional challenges due to their location.
These challenges range from accessing safe and affordable drinking water in the state’s north, to ensuring support services can keep pace with growing communities in places like Mount Barker.
Regional communities can also be disproportionately affected by such climate-related events as fires and floods.
SACOSS will continue to work with, and for, all South Australians, regardless of where they live.
What does SACOSS want?
Upper Spencer Gulf planning
The Upper Spencer Gulf is poised to undergo a SA government-led expansion. This economic opportunity is welcome – but must be accompanied by appropriate social planning to ensure no-one is left behind.
Support for growing communities
Communities near to Adelaide such as Mount Barker and Freeling are at varying stages of population growth. While this growth is important to the state’s economic prosperity, it must be achieved in conjunction with the appropriate level of community and social support systems.
Digital inclusion
All South Australians must be able to access and afford digital technologies with the necessary ability.
This event, facilitated by SACOSS and hosted by the Mount Barker District Council, brought together members of the community services sector and representatives from local, state and federal government to discuss crucial issues of development in the region.
This Policy Brief is a stand-alone version of the proposal in the SACOSS 2024-25 State Budget Submission calling for social impact and human services planning for the Upper Spencer Gulf.
Examines the critical role of regional libraries and community centres in building digital inclusion
Lessons from the Flood: A focus on people at risk in emergencies is a report by SACOSS and Red Cross based on stakeholder forums in the wake of the 2022 -23 River Murray flood.
