About SACOSS
The South Australian Council of Social Service is the peak representative body for the non-government community, social and health sectors.
We have a proud history of mobilising to eliminate poverty, inequality and injustice in SA, and holding governments and decision-makers to account.
We develop a fair and just community through our policy and advocacy solutions. We cultivate an informed and thriving community sector.
SACOSS seeks Justice, Opportunity and Shared Wealth for all South Australians
our vision
SACOSS believes that everyone deserves all the things that make for a good life – justice, a secure home, access to respectful health care, an income that truly covers the basics and genuine equality of opportunity.
our Mission
SACOSS challenges poverty stereotypes. We want to change the narrative so that everyone is treated fairly. This means raising awareness about inequality and injustice and developing effective policy solutions to address them.
our goals
To collaborate with the community sector in the effort to eliminate poverty, inequality and injustice in South Australia.
our PURPOSE

To develop a fair and just community, and cultivate an informed and thriving community sector
OUR PROUD HISTORY
Around 1943/44, South Australian community leaders established the Youth Welfare Coordinating Council (YWCC) out of growing concern for the ‘children of nobody’.
In 1946, the YWCC was incorporated into a wider body representing interests concerned with the social welfare of the community as a whole. This organisation was modelled loosely on the British Council of Social Service, and was named the South Australian Council of Social Service.
For more than 75 years, SACOSS has represented the interests of its member bodies from across the community and social services sector as it advocates for justice, fairness and shared wealth for all South Australians. It has operated out of many different locations across the Adelaide CBD and has been in its current location of historic Marjorie Black House in Unley since 2007.
