Why Does this Matter?
If everyone in our society is able to live a decent life – including children, young people and families – it is essential that they have access to safe and affordable housing, healthcare, education, a clean environment and social connection. We all need and want these things.
All children and young people should have access to the opportunities that flow from connection to family, culture and community. All children should be safe, cared for, and happy.
Protection from harm for young people means more than just safety.
The best interests of children should be served in the first instance by addressing the harms that undermine good outcomes. These harms include:
- Poverty and inequality;
- Homelessness;
- Poor health;
- Inadequate education;
- Family violence;
- Criminalisation and incarceration; and
- Disconnection from culture and community.
What does SACOSS Want?
Improving and implementing the Children and Young People (Safety) Act
The strengthening of South Australia’s Children and Young People (Safety) Act in the best interests of all children and young people, and the application of relevant components of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Raise the Age
We support legislation to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14 years of age, without exception. Raising the age needs to be accompanied by appropriate policies, programs, and therapeutic trauma-informed support services.
A Human Rights Act for South Australia
Children and young people would benefit from legislation underpinning the right for all South Australians to lead lives with equality, dignity and respect. This would include the principles in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
An end to domestic and family violence
Children and young people need to feel safe at home. Women and children have a fundamental right to safety and freedom from violence. Unsafe home environments mean that services for women and children must be available, accessible, equitable and non-discriminatory. This means that systemic barriers are recognised and dismantled.
