SACOSS’s submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee calls for urgent, evidence-based reform of Australia’s youth justice system. Drawing on extensive research and lived experience, it highlights the harms of punitive, incarceration-focused approaches and the over-representation of First Nations children, while advocating for trauma-informed, diversionary and community-led responses that better support children’s wellbeing, uphold human rights and improve community safety.
