Why Does this Matter?
Human rights are fundamental for a society that values wellbeing, dignity and equality.
A Human Rights Act for South Australia is long overdue.
It would create a legislated values-based framework that would significantly improve the way we develop laws and policies.
It would enable the South Australian Government to meet its obligations under the various international human rights instruments that Australia has ratified.
And most importantly, it’s needed because every South Australian should truly be equal.
Eliminating disadvantage and poverty is part of tackling offending behaviour.
Justice is also fundamental to a progressive modern society – but needs to be considered beyond being ‘tough on crime’.
Aspects such as early intervention strategies, restorative justice for victims of crime, and meaningful rehabilitation for offenders are all important.
Eliminating disadvantage and poverty is part of tackling offending behaviour. People living in poverty should not be punished more just because of their circumstances.
What does SACOSS Want?
A Human Rights Act for South Australia
Legislation that ensures all South Australians have a right to a life of wellbeing, dignity and equality.
Raise the Age
We support legislation to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14 years of age, without exception.
Reduce incarceration of First Nations Peoples
First Nations people remain over-represented in South Australia’s prison population. As part of the Closing the Gap commitments, we need a plan and accompanying action that sees fewer First Nations people incarcerated.
