In our submission to the South Australian Parliament’s Social Development Committee, SACOSS calls for urgent action to address child food insecurity across preschools and schools. Drawing on community consultations and national and international evidence, the report highlights the profound impact of food insecurity on children’s health, learning, and wellbeing—and the need for a more equitable, consistent system of food provision. SACOSS recommends tackling root causes like poverty and housing stress, extending the Secure Food Systems project, and exploring a universal, stigma-free school lunch program. This is not just a nutrition issue—it’s a matter of children’s rights, dignity, and opportunity.
