In its July 2025 submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission, SACOSS warns that the current energy pricing system risks locking in structural inequities—particularly for renters and low-income households—unless major reforms are made. The submission challenges the effectiveness and fairness of Time-of-Use tariffs and criticises the shift of fixed network costs from solar/battery households onto those without access to behind-the-meter energy. SACOSS advocates for fixed charges to recover fixed network costs, stronger consumer protections, and a regulatory approach that prioritises simplicity, equity, and affordability over complex pricing signals. With energy costs rising and retail competition failing many consumers, SACOSS calls for systemic changes to ensure no South Australian household is left behind.
