In its submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission’s Gas Networks in Transition consultation, SACOSS supports key rule changes proposed by Energy Consumers Australia and the Justice and Equity Centre to make the National Gas Rules fit for a decarbonising future. The submission highlights the need for stronger oversight of gas network investment, limits on accelerated depreciation, improved transparency through annual planning reports, and fair cost-sharing between investors and households. SACOSS argues that as gas demand declines, regulatory reform is essential to protect consumers—particularly low-income households—from bearing the costs of an inevitable system transition.
