People At Risk In Emergencies
Planning effective disaster management for all
Disasters such as bushfires or floods can impact on all South Australians – but their effects are most acutely felt by those with issues around:
- Physical mobility
- Cognition and decision making
- Communication
- Affording risk reduction and insurance
- Accessible transport
- Appropriate housing
- Social isolation
- Dependency
SACOSS, in partnership with Australian Red Cross, is working to create a framework and develop plans to address the needs of these people most at risk in emergencies. The goal of the project is that affected people (and their carers) are better prepared for dealing with both the immediate impact and the aftermath of emergencies such as heatwaves, floods and bushfires.
At least 132 organisations across SA actively participate in our project and are taking steps to improve their preparedness by:
- updating their emergency plans
- purchasing emergency kits for vehicles
- purchasing satellite phones
- updating resources for improved emergency planning for clients
- developing emergency plans with clients
- designating cool zones
With the likelihood of climate-related emergencies growing, there is a clear need to remain dedicated to helping people at risk in emergencies.
