SACOSS has formally objected to the decision permitting the Heysen Hotel to acquire a gaming machine licence. Our submission highlights the significant harm caused by poker machines, referencing national research that demonstrates their disproportionate impact on problem gamblers and vulnerable communities. The decision, we argue, fails to adequately recognize the extensive evidence on gambling harm, the negative social and economic effects on local communities, and the necessity for a rigorous Community Impact Submission from proponents. SACOSS urges policymakers to reconsider the approval of this licence in light of its potential for serious harm.
