How does your health suffer if you don’t earn enough? Our Health and Waged Poverty project is believed to be an Australian-first examination of how people’s health could be impacted by earning low wages. Waged poverty is a term used to describe people earning low wages that are not enough to meet basic living expenses. People don’t have to be on government-based income supports such as JobSeeker or the pension to experience poverty. In South Australia, nearly one out of four households experiencing poverty has wages as their main source of income. Previous research from around the world has shown that people experiencing waged poverty have poorer health, but until now, no Australian research has confirmed this. Our report, which is based on hearing directly from South Australians’ lived experiences, examines the link between health and waged poverty, and makes recommendations about how to improve outcomes.
