FOOD security
Everyone deserves affordable and nutritious food
Australia is a wealthy country, but many people in our community struggle to access food that is affordable, nutritious, and suitable for their physical and cultural needs.
In April, May and June 2024, SACOSS and Democracy Co hosted a series of community conversations with a diverse range of South Australians to hear about their experiences with food insecurity.
More than 300 people took part in the conversations, with many more submitting survey responses online.
On 29 June 2024, a concluding workshop was held with some 40 participants coming together to help finalise a report provided to the state government as part of its review into South Australia’s food system.
The report contains recommendations around how to improve access to healthy, affordable and nutritious food while detailing the impact food insecurity can have, particularly on vulnerable communities and those on low incomes.
The reports of the community conversations, community panel and community survey and the final synthesis report prepared by SACOSS have now been published as part of the Secure Food Systems for SA project home on the DHS food security website.
This project is funded by the Department of Human Services and Preventive Health SA.
