This SACOSS briefing paper argues that South Australia’s current Water Security Statement is no longer fit for purpose in the face of climate change, affordability pressures and growing risks to communities, particularly in regional and remote areas. It calls for a broader, more holistic definition of water security aligned with the draft National Water Initiative, one that explicitly includes affordability, access, risk and wellbeing. The paper recommends a renewed Water Security Statement that recognises the cross-government nature of water security, establishes clear priorities and measurable outcomes, and ensures ongoing monitoring to protect vulnerable communities from bearing an inequitable burden.
